Rimutaka Incline Walkway

What: Bed of old incline (up to 1 in 15) railway run on the centre grip rail (Fell) system. Ran 1878 - 1955. Tunnels. Reasonable fitness required.  Interpreted. 

Where:  Between the upper Hutt Valley and The Wairarapa.

How to get there: Follow SH 2 from Wellington to Kaitoke

How long to allow: (one way) Kaitoke to summit - 10 km - 3 hrs, Summit to Cross Creek 5km - 1.5 hrs (this in the steep bit), Cross Creek to car park 30 minutes. You need to make your own arrangements for collection if going one way.

What else to do there: Fell Engine Museum Featherston. Wineries in the Wairarapa. 


Fort Ballance 


Muzzle loaded 7 " gun emplacement and mount.

Nordenfelt quick firing gun emplacement. 
What: Harbour fortification from 1885 onwards.

Where:  Eastern side of Miramar Peninsula .

How to get there: Park in the next bay north of Scorching Bay, walk up the road from the bay - 10 minutes.

How long to allow: 1 Hour

Fort Dorset 


12 pounder gun emplacements.

Observation point on the hill top.
What: Harbour fortification from 1910 onwards - largely demolished.

Where: South of Seatoun

How to get there: Go to the southern end of Seatoun foreshore and follow the track around the coast - there is a steep climb up a sand face at one point.

How long to allow: 1 hour

  Palmer Head / Moa Point


Moa Point
What: Observation point / radar station. Palmer Head battery built 1937 has been demolished but the plotting room and the Moa Point observation point remain. Moa Point was later a radar site.

Where:  East of the southern end of the airport.

How to get there: Park a the end of Ahuriri St and walk through the reserve

How long to allow: 1 hr.

What else to do there: Watch the planes.


  Plimmer's Ark


What: Remains of a beached ship, Inconstant, once used as a warehouse and then built over. The remains can be seen beneath a glazed floor - interpretation and some of the finds from an investigation are on display. Some part of the ship was removed and is now on display in Plimmer’s Ark Gallery, TSB Bank Arena, Queens Wharf.

Where: The Old Bank Complex, Customhouse Quay, central Wellington.

How to get there: Go into the lowest level of the building - the display is easily found.

How long to allow: Half hour.

What else to do there: Enjoy the shops and eating places in the building. Wellington City Museum is close by.
