The New Zealand Archaeological Association is a registered charity run by volunteers through an annually elected Council and appointed Officers.
The objectives of the Association, as outlined in its Constitution, are:
a) To give effect to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and value rangatiratanga and mātauranga Māori in relation to archaeology in Aotearoa New Zealand.
b) To encourage and facilitate archaeological research into the ancestral footprints of all peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific.
c) To advocate for the recognition, protection and conservation of Aotearoa New Zealand’s archaeological heritage.
d) To facilitate engagement and interest in archaeology in culturally appropriate and socially responsible ways.
e) To encourage and facilitate the appropriate sharing of archaeological stories and knowledge.
f) To establish, maintain and encourage adherence to professional standards and ethics as set out in Appendix 1.
g) To ensure the maintenance and development of the Association’s Site Recording Scheme as the national inventory of archaeological sites for Aotearoa New Zealand.
