The New Zealand Archaeological Association is working to increase public awareness and highlight the importance of protecting our archaeological heritage by promoting the work of New Zealand archaeologists both at home and abroad.

This will be the ninth New Zealand Archaeology Week. The event has been able to continue due to the wonderful effort and input from the archaeological community, heritage organisations and tangata whenua.

New Zealand Archaeology Week 2025 will comprise of a variety of events around Aotearoa and content shared online.  These events are being hosted by consultant archaeologists, museums, heritage organisations and iwi and will include public talks, historic walks, community events and displays across a number of regions.

Events are listed below, as well as on our NZAA Facebook page and Eventfinda.

NZAA is working with a number of partners to develop and share content on our social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Look out for the hashtag #nzarchweek2025

If you would like to be involved or have content you’d like to share as part of the week, please get in touch with Toni-Maree Rowe (archaeologyweek@nzarchaeology.org). Or share content via your own social media, using the hashtag #nzarchweek2025

The Great New Zealand Archaeology Bake Off!

Yes it’s that time again! Close the laptop, put down the trowel and dust off your aprons…we want to see your very best efforts at showcasing New Zealand archaeology in edible form. Doesn’t need to be a cake (gingerbread enthusiasts I’m looking at you), if you can bake it and eat it then you’re in with a chance!

Previous years we have had some great entries focussing on the art of excavation but don’t forget archaeology can include artefacts and places…

The competition is open to all (don’t need to be a NZAA member to participate) so let’s have some fun! Photos of your amazing creations are to be sent to archaeologyweek@nzarchaeology.org along with your contact details.

All photos must be submitted by the 11th of May. These will then be posted on social media and the photo with the most votes by Tuesday 13th of May will be the winner. The winner will receive a $50 Pressie card, a certificate they can proudly display on their fridge and of course bragging rights!
