Home Resources New Zealand Heritage Organisations

NZAA works closely with many other heritage organisations in New Zealand which share in our objectives and our commitment to promote research and teaching in archaeology and heritage, and advocate for the protection and conservation of archaeological, heritage and cultural sites in New Zealand. These organisation include volunteer groups like ourselves, international associations and statutory government bodies.

Historic Places Aotearoa (HPA) is made up of member organisations. NZAA works closely with HPA in campaigning and advocating for heritage nationwide.

NZAA works closely with the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology (ASHA) and many of our members are also members of ASHA. In 2016 NZAA helped organise the annual ASHA conference in Christchurch.

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga (HNZPT) is the lead government agency that protects New Zealand’s heritage and manages the archaeological authority application process. HNZPT recognises NZAA’s Site Recording Scheme as the national database of recorded archaeological sites.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places. ICOMOS is a global, non-government organisation. NZAA works closely with the New Zealand committee of ICOMOS to protect archaeological sites.

Museums Aotearoa, Te Tari o Ngā Whare Taonga o Te Motu, is the independent professional association for New Zealand’s museums and galleries and those who work for them. NZAA members work closely with museums to safeguard, protect and interpret archaeological finds and excavated assemblages.

The New Zealand Conservators of Cultural Materials Pu Manaaki Kahurangi (NZCCM) is an association of professional conservators of cultural property dedicated to the preservation of cultural materials. Many of the items that NZAA members excavate are fragile and require expert conservation.
