Roger C. Green Lifetime Achievement Award

This award is presented when appropriate in recognition of an association member’s significant and sustained contribution to the knowledge of New Zealand’s past through the practice of archaeology (excavation, analysis, research, education and publication). 

Award for Demonstrated Commitment to Kaupapa Māori in Archaeology and Kaihura Māori.

The recipient has:

  • Demonstrated consistent commitment to Kaupapa Māori in archaeology and Kaihura Māori;
  • Been consistent in their commitment to Kaupapa Māori and Kaihura Māori;
  • Been dedicated in their service to Kaupapa Māori and Kaihura Māori over time;
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing Kaupapa Māori and Kaihura Māori aspirations;
  • Actively supported Kaitiaki Māori in achieving their aspirations in the Tautiaki Wahi Taonga (archaeological) space; and
  • Actively advocated for Kaitiaki Māori in Tautiaki Wahi Taonga – in archaeology.

This award will be made biennially.

Award in Recognition of Upcoming Kaihura Māori

The recipient has:

  • Demonstrated sustained commitment to the pursuit of Kaupapa Māori in archaeology and Kaihura Māori;
  • Demonstrated a measurable contribution to Kaupapa Māori in the realm of Tautiaki Wahi Taonga me Nga Tapuwae o Nga Tupuna;
  • Shown initiative and acumen as Kaihura Māori; and
  • Displayed leadership attributes that are a source of inspiration.

This award will be made biennially

Award for Outstanding Contribution to Archaeology

This award recognises an individual member of the New Zealand Archaeological Association who has made a specific and outstanding contribution to archaeology through the course of a particular project, be it field work, research, consultancy or advocacy. Nominations based solely around public outreach are best submitted for the Public Archaeology Award. The nominee may come from any sector of archaeology, such as academic, consultancy, government department or volunteer, but they must be a member of the association. The archaeologist and project should demonstrate some or all of the following: excellence in the field, leadership, inclusivity and professionalism, and a high standard of research and outputs. Factors such as publication and/or dissemination of the work will be taken into account.

This award will be made biennially

Public Archaeology Award

This award will be made biennially, in recognition of outstanding efforts in public archaeology.

The award is open to members of NZAA and the wider community, including individuals, groups and organisations (for example, territorial authorities and iwi).

The following factors are considered:

  • contribution to the identification, protection and preservation of archaeological sites;
  • contribution to the enhancement of public awareness and enjoyment of, and education about, archaeological sites or archaeology in general;
  • contribution to the strengthening of the relationship between the archaeological community and Māori; and
  • any other relevant information.

AINZ  Best Student Paper

This prize is open to any enrolled student. If the winner is a NZAA member the prize is $300. If the winner is not already a member the prize is $250 plus a year’s membership. Each prize period runs from the September to June issues of the AINZ.

Conference awards: Best Papers (student and overall), Best Posters (student and overall)

These prizes are awarded at the annual NZAA conference. A panel of judges determines the best student and overall contributors to the poster and paper presentations. Students must be currently enrolled to be eligible for the student prizes. The winners are announced at the conference dinner.

Photo Competition

NZAA runs a photo competition for its members as part of its annual conference. The winner is decided by the conference attendees, and will be displayed on the NZAA website and may also be chosen as a future cover of Archaeology in New Zealand.
