AINZ  Best Student Paper

This prize is open to any enrolled student. If the winner is a NZAA member the prize is $300. If the winner is not already a member the prize is $250 plus a year’s membership. Each prize period runs from the September to June issues of the AINZ.

Award for Outstanding Contribution to Archaeology

This award recognises an individual member of the New Zealand Archaeological Association who has made a specific and outstanding contribution to archaeology. The recipient may come from any sector of archaeology, be it academic, consultancy, government department or volunteer, but they must be a member of the association. With the exception of public archaeology (recognised by the Public Archaeology Award), a varied range of contributions to the field of archaeology will be considered, such as the development of a new technology, a new theoretical or methodological approach, or significant fieldwork or data analysis. Preference will be given to specific projects, rather than worthy candidates who might be better recognised by the lifetime achievement award. Factors such as publication and/or dissemination of the work will be taken into account.

This award will be made biennially, in even years.

Public Archaeology Award

This award will be made biennially (in odd years) in recognition of outstanding efforts in public archaeology.

The award is open to members of NZAA and the wider community, including individuals, groups and organisations (for example, territorial authorities and iwi).

The following factors are considered:

  • contribution to the identification, protection and preservation of archaeological sites;
  • contribution to the enhancement of public awareness and enjoyment of, and education about, archaeological sites or archaeology in general;
  • contribution to the strengthening of the relationship between the archaeological community and Māori; and
  • any other relevant information.

Conference awards: Best Papers (student and overall), Best Posters (student and overall)

These prizes are awarded at the annual NZAA conference. A panel of judges determines the best student and overall contributors to the poster and paper presentations. Students must be currently enrolled to be eligible for the student prizes. The winners are announced at the conference dinner.

Photo Competition

NZAA runs a photo competition for its members as part of its annual conference. The winner is decided by the conference attendees, and will be displayed on the NZAA website and may also be chosen as a future cover of Archaeology in New Zealand.
