Tai timu, tai pari: the ebb and flow between people and place, engaging and shaping of environments through time.

The 2025 New Zealand Archaeological Conference will be held in Mount Maunganui from Tuesday 15th July  –  Friday 18th July.

Call for Papers is open

We invite proposals for paper presentations. Depending on the number of accepted papers, presentations will be between 15 and 20 minutes long. Note that there will be no concurrent sessions, so please get in early if you wish to secure a spot in the programme.

For paper proposals please email papers@nzarchaeology.org with the following information:

  • Contact details for the corresponding author (the person who will receive all communication – regarding the presentation).
  • Name and affiliation of all authors.
  • Paper title – should be no more than 20 words.
  • Abstract – no more than 250 words (no images).

Posters must be A1 or A2 size. Please email the author names, poster title and an 80 – 100 word abstract to papers@nzarchaeology.org for consideration.

Call for nominations for the Outstanding Contribution to Archaeology Award 2025

This year NZAA will be awarding the Outstanding Contribution to Archaeology Award at the annual conference.

This award acknowledges an individual member of the New Zealand Archaeological Association who has made a notable contribution to archaeology through a particular project, whether it involves fieldwork, research, consultancy, or advocacy. Further details on the award and criteria can be found here.

Nominations should be sent to the NZAA secretary (secretary@nzarchaeology.org) by 5.00pm 30 May 2025. The award recipient will be announced at the conference gala dinner on Thursday 17 July.

  • Welcome Event: Drinks at Astrolab Brew Bar with music from DJ BPM (Ben Pick Music) | 82 Maunganui Road, Mount Maunganui | 6:30pm | Sponsored by CFG Heritage.

Wednesday 16 July 8:30am – 5:00pm

  • Paper sessions and AGM
  • Evening Event: “Tatai Arorangi – Māori Navigation by Astronomy”| Mount Maunganui College Marae | 7:30-8:30pm.

Thursday 17 July 8:30am – 5:00pm

  • Paper sessions
  • Conference Dinner: Latitude 37 | 181 Maunganui Road, Mount Maunganui | 7:00pm

Friday 18 July 9:00am – 4:00pm

  • Conference Field Trip: The field trip will visit the Pāpāmoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park and the Mauao Historic Reserve. You will need good walking shoes and a reasonable level of fitness for the Pāpāmoa Hills as it is a steep walk, but the archaeology and the views are worth it! If you have concerns about the walk, please contact Rachel Darmody BEFORE booking the fieldtrip (archaeologistln@heritage.org.nz).
  • A picnic lunch will be provided
  • Bus transport will run from the conference centre, leaving 9:00am and returning at 4:00pm.

  • Notification of acceptance to presenters early June
  • Confirmation of programme mid June 2025
  • Online registration closes 23 June 2025
  • All presenters must register for the conference to be included in the programme. Presenter registration, including payment of the registration fee must be completed no later than 23 June 2025
