NZAA has established two annual grants to support and encourage consultants to publish papers in Archaeology in New Zealand (AINZ) and the Journal of Pacific Archaeology (JPA). While we recognise the outstanding effort made by our regular contributors to AINZ and JPA over the years, we also recognise that it can be difficult for many consultants to make the time to write up their excavations for publication. These grants are intended to make that process easier. The dissemination of archaeological information and the encouragement of archaeological research are both objectives of the NZAA (c and e) and fit easily within the goal of sharing Aotearoa New Zealand’s past, as outlined in the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan.
The grants will be awarded annually. The AINZ Publication Grant is for $1000 and the JPA Publication Grant is for $3000, to cover the recipients’ expenses during the process of writing and reviewing a submission for publication.
The criteria are:
- Applicants must be a member of NZAA.
- The grants will be available to archaeological consultants and researchers who are not employed by or studying at existing research institutions in New Zealand.
- The subject of the proposed paper must be primarily related to Aotearoa New Zealand archaeology.
- The work reported on must primarily be the result of consultancy work, such as an archaeological authority or a heritage assessment. The final report on the work must have been completed and submitted. In exceptional circumstances, applications where the report has not been completed will be considered.
Applications
Application for the awards will require a 250-word abstract on the proposed research paper, plus proof of eligibility, including when the final report was submitted. Applications relating to sites or archaeology of interest to Māori must include a letter of support from mana whenua. Papers that are jointly authored by an archaeologist and mana whenua are encouraged. Where practicable, applications should also be accompanied by a letter of support from the archaeological authority holder and/or client. Applications for co-authored papers will be accepted, but the total sum paid out will remain the same.
Applications for grants can be made at any time during the year. Applications should be sent to the NZAA secretary (secretary@nzarchaeology.org) and will be considered at the next meeting following receipt of the application.
