NZAA Awards – Nominations Open
With conference coming up, it means it’s also time for the annual NZAA awards! This year, at the instigation of the Kaupapa Māori Advisory Group, NZAA Council is delighted to announce two new awards to our awards programme (although only one of them is available this year).
Award for Demonstrated Commitment to Kaupapa Māori in Archaeology and Kaihura Māori
This award recognises someone who has demonstrated a consistent commitment to Kaupapa Māori in archaeology and Kaihura Māori and to advancing Kaupapa Māori and Kaihura Māori aspirations. They will also have actively supported Kaitiaki Māori in achieving their aspirations in the Tautiaki Wahi Taonga (archaeological) space and actively advocated for Kaitiaki Māori in Tautiaki Wahi Taonga – in archaeology.
Award for Outstanding Contribution to Archaeology
This award recognises an individual member of the New Zealand Archaeological Association who has made a specific and outstanding contribution to archaeology through the course of a particular project, be it field work, research, consultancy or advocacy. Nominations based solely around public outreach are best submitted for the Public Archaeology Award. The nominee may come from any sector of archaeology, such as academic, consultancy, government department or volunteer, but they must be a member of the association. The archaeologist and project should demonstrate some or all of the following: excellence in the field, leadership, inclusivity and professionalism, and a high standard of research and outputs. Factors such as publication and/or dissemination of the work will be taken into account.
Nominations for both these awards close at 5.00pm on Wednesday 28th June 2023. Nominations should be sent to the NZAA secretary (secretary@nzarchaeology.org). The recipients of these awards will be announced at the conference dinner on Friday 7th July.

Walton Fund
We are delighted to announce that this year’s recipient of the Walton Fund grant is Leela Moses (CFG Heritage archaeologist, Ngāti Kuia). Leela’s project, together with Ngāti Kuia and the Department of Conservation, will update and create site records in remote areas of the Marlborough Sound, which have not seen significant archaeological attention since the 1970s. Te Pākeka (Maud Island) and Titirangi are both significant archaeological landscapes, whose histories have an important place in the kōrero of Ngāti Kuia. This mahi will be carried out by Leela, in conjunction with Ruihana Smith (Ngāti Kuia Te PouHāpai Taiao), adding to our knowledge of these wāhi tīpuna, and building iwi capacity for future surveys. We wish Leela all the best with her project.
