Archaeological excavation of the area where two buttons were found two years ago in the Dunedin Townbelt. The buttons belonged to officers in the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot who were situated in Dunedin between 1860 and 1861.

Excavation is open to members of the general public who are interested in archaeology. The aim will be for the public to participate in an archaeological excavation alongside trained archaeologists.

  • Town Belt, situated behind Otago Boys High School Grounds,  2 Arthur St, Dunedin, 9016
  • People are welcome to show up and participate without signing up.
  • Participation will be on a first come first served basis and there will be enough equipment for up to five people at a time.
  • Participants need to bring sturdy shoes with them, wear weather appropriate clothing, and bring their own food.
  • Excavation will start at 9am and finish sometime before or around 5pm depending on what is encountered.
