Power point presentation on the archaeology and history of Okiato. 30 minutes followed by question time.
Okiato Pt in the Bay of Islands played a significant role in the years prior to and after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. At various times a whaling provision centre, the residence of the united States Honorary Consul, and then the seat of the first Colonial Government, this point today appears only as a quiet residential backwater. Based on historic research and archaeological investigation this talk we will re-examine the role Okiato played in New Zealand’s history.
