Archaeological monitoring has been underway at Papanui Inlet since the discovery of an intriguing wooden structure eroding out of the beach in 2007.

In January 2018, Shar Briden (Absolute Archaeology Ltd) and Rachel Wesley (Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou/Otago Museum) led a team of volunteers in further excavations at the site. This talk recounts the recent archaeological mahi and offers insights into preliminary findings.
