Join council’s Principal Heritage Advisor George Farrant on a tour of Michael Joseph Savage’s memorial and mausoleum at Bastion Point, and see the re-excavated pair of 6” disappearing gun pits and other tunnels now beneath the memorial gardens, and learn about the mystery of exactly where the former Prime Minister is interred.

Note that a vertical ladder climb of 3 metres is involved to access the pits and tunnels, and the underground spaces are moderately dirty, so appropriate clothing is recommended (ladies: trousers).

Meet at the base of the monument, adjacent to the reflective pool.

Bookings required as spaces are limited (Mary.Kienholz@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz).
